A weekend at Peninsula de Hicacos
Cuba: Colonial Treasures & Atlantic Coast, two sides of one island.
4 Days / 3 Nights | Havana – Peninsula de Hicacos
Four days of sun, caves, coral reefs, and Cuban culture – be ready for your weekend escape. White sand. Underground caves. Coral reefs.
Day 1 – Arrival & Sunset Welcome
Land at José Martí International Airport (HAV). Your private driver meets you – no waiting, no shared vans. Settle into the car for a 2.5-hour journey east to the Hicacos Peninsula.
Welcome to Peninsula de Hicacos (Matanzas).
Check into your casa particular – a private homestay where your Cuban host will welcome you like family. After lunch at a nearby paladar, it’s time to stretch your legs. Join your local guide for a walking tour through downtown Varadero. Depending on the hour, you might catch a sunset stroll along the famous white-sand beach. Want wheels instead? Upgrade to a convertible tour ride throughout the peninsula.
Evening: Dinner at a paladar. Then rest – bigger adventures await tomorrow.
Overnight in Varadero.
Day 2 – Caves & Local Culture
Wake up to breakfast at your casa. Then head out for the morning’s main event: Cueva de Saturno (Saturn Cave). A 30-minute drive takes you to this natural flooded cave – a sinkhole with crystal-clear freshwater so pure you can see every rock on the bottom. Swim in the cool, calm waters. (Tip: Go early to avoid tour groups. You’ll have the cave almost to yourself.)
Afternoon: Lunch at a paladar. Then choose your adventure:
- Option A: Josone Park – A 9-hectare oasis of gardens, a paddle boat lake, and historic mansions now housing restaurants and bars. Perfect for a slow, romantic afternoon.
- Option B: Varadero Street Market – Authentic Cuban crafts, leather goods, paintings, and souvenirs. Meet the artists. Buy direct. Take a piece of Cuba home.
Evening: Dinner at another local paladar. Walk off your meal along the Malecón or simply rest.
Overnight in Varadero.
Day 3 – Hicacos Adventures (You Choose)
Breakfast. Then decide how you want to spend your morning – land or sea.
Option A: Varahicacos Ecological Reserve (Land)
Hike through this protected peninsula with a local guide. You’ll meet El Patriarca – a 500-year-old cactus, taller than a house, still standing after five centuries. Then descend into Cueva de Ambrosio to see ancient indigenous pictographs left by the island’s first people.
Option B: Snorkeling Adventure (Sea)
Grab your mask and fins. A local expert diver will take you to the best reefs off the Hicacos coast. Swim over coral gardens teeming with tropical fish – parrotfish, angelfish, sergeant majors. The water is warm, clear, and welcoming to beginners and experienced snorkelers alike.
Afternoon: Lunch at a paladar. Then free time – explore on your own, take photographs, journal by the sea, or simply nap in a hammock.
Evening: Farewell dinner at a paladar. One last taste of Cuban cooking. One last toast.
Overnight in Varadero.
Day 4 – Souvenirs & Goodbye
Breakfast. If time permits, a final dash to the craft market for last-minute souvenirs – a painting, a leather bag, a wooden statue, or simply more coffee.
Check out of your casa particular. Your private driver arrives to take you back to José Martí International Airport (2.5 hours).
You leave with salt in your hair, sand in your shoes, and a new understanding of Cuba.
